The standard elbow series involves an anteroposterior (AP) and a Lateral projection of the elbow. As one of the most radiographed joints, a screening referred to as the “elbow series” has been proposed. The importance for identification of fractures is related to the clinical outcome following their proper or improper healing. 6 The treatment of these fractures is more complex and can also be surgical. ![]() 9 The less often encountered radial head fractures comprise: displaced fractures (Mason type II) comminuted fractures (type III) and fractures of the radial head with a dislocation of the elbow joint (type IV). 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 Function is restored nearly completely within a 2–3 month period, with some loss of extension being expected, while non-union occurs in 5% of cases. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 Treatment includes early mobilization, results being better when there is an initial two-day immobilization period (collar and cuff sling). 7, 8 Complications include stiffness, development of post-traumatic osteoarthritis, permanent instability of the elbow and loss of joint function (flexion, extension, supination or pronation). 6, 7 They are treated conservatively with a good outcome never the less they should not be underestimated as their complications can be severe and despite recovery movement might not be fully regained. ![]() 1, 6, 7 The commonest fractures are Mason type I: marginal and undisplaced fractures that do not pose a serious threat but can sometimes result in some restriction of movement. 2, 3, 4, 5 Fractures are classified according to the Mason-Johnson system into four types (I-IV) based on the fracture's morphology and the presence or not of elbow joint dislocation. 1, 2, 3, 4 The most common type of fracture involves the head of radius, accounting for 4% of all fractures and 1/3 of elbow fractures in adults. The elbow joint is often subjected to trauma and is therefore one of the most frequent causes for visits in the emergency department.
